May 2019 Building Update

Building Progress Update The fence is down and now is the perfect time to take a walk down Railroad Avenue and enjoy the full impact of the red sandstone juxtaposed against the dark grey board and batten siding and natural wood beams on the new Lyons Community Library. The new library will offer multiple outdoor spaces for the community to enjoy; the front porch welcomes visitors while two flagstone patios on the east and west ends of the building invite you to soak up the sun with a good read. Work continues outside this month on the west patio, the children's garden and landscaping. The progress on the interior continues, final paint…

March 2019 Update

By Darcie Sanders, Lyons Regional Library District Trustee New Library Progress Update The dramatic progress on the new building is visible for all to see. The exterior siding is painted its final dark gray color. The new windows with their handsome ox-blood red trim are all in. The temperature needs to be above 35 degrees F for exterior stonework, and weather-permitting that work will recommence until the fireplace reaches its full 27-ft height. Inside, the stonework on the fireplace in the reading room is already complete. In the coming weeks gas and electric will get hooked up and drywall installed. Staff is busy finalizing furniture and equipment. Despite a run of rather…

National Mental Health Month

May is National Mental Health Month. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, 20% of youth ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition and one in every five adults in America experience a mental illness. Mental health affects everyone regardless of socioeconomic status, culture, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation; yet fewer than 60% of adults and 50% of youth receive mental health services. This lack of treatment is a culmination of lack of information, availability of treatment options, and the social stigma associated with mental illness. The library is a proud partner of the Lyons Mental Health Initiative (LMHI), who will be hosting a Community Conversation on Mental Health led by…

April 2019 Building Update

Building Progress Update

By Kara Bauman

Some of you may have noticed that the construction trailer used as an on-site office was removed the first week of April. That means the Owner/Architect/Contractor Team was able to hold the very first meeting in the new library on April 10th! While it was a momentous occasion, there is still a lot of loud work taking place and none should be too jealous just yet. The progress is really something with many exciting milestones to report. The Library was able to square away everything with its transformer and now has permanent power. The natural gas line will be completed during the week of April 15th and will fuel both the hot water heater and our gorgeous stone-faced fireplace located in the Quiet Reading Room. Book shelving has been ordered and many of the furniture finishes have been determined and ordered. Following the necessary application of a moisture-mitigation product to our concrete slab, carpet for the main collections space and the luxury vinyl tile chosen for the large Community Room will be laid during the week of the 15th.  Restrooms throughout the building are looking much more official now that toilets have been installed.
